Summary

Five newly-wed couples of IIUM Staff gathered at a "Mass Wedding" at al-Malik Faisal to re-celebrate their weddings which were attended by 300 people including Prof. Kamal Hassan, Deputy Rector (Academic Affairs) and Dr. Sidek Baba, Deputy Rector (Student Affairs), relatives and spouses of the staff, as well as staff of STAD, were present at the colourful occasion.

Significant value of the resource to IIUM and community

This dinner reception in traditional Malay "songket" dresses, with "silat" (martial art), 'kompang' presentations, and dais delivered the strong message that while certain Malay traditional customs are recognized as not contradictory to Islam, there is no place for ostentatious yet expensive wedding paraphernalia. The vital element is the Akad itself, plus the feast that publicly announces the marriage.
