The event was officiated by Y. A. B. Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. For its 28th Annual Convention, the IMA decided to hold it outside the USA and chose Malaysia as the venue not only for its beauty but also for its real Islamic character. The Convention was held at Hotel Istana in Kuala Lumpur on July 9-14. It was attended by some 400 Muslim doctors from North America and other countries.
The Convention also emphasized clinical applications and medical research from Islamic perceptions. Other issues discussed included ethical dilemmas resulting from advances in technology, and scientific approaches toward health and diseases.
It aimed to show the community that Islamic medical treatment does not mean abandoning scientific and modern approaches and finding ways to modernise Islamic medical concepts. It was also an ideal opportunity for the exchange of clinical and research information between East and West.
