The demand for the Islamic university by the National Union of Muslim Students Organisations of Malaysia (PKPIM) continued to gather momentum after the establishment of the Muslim College in Klang, Selangor in 1955. In addition, one of the resolutions adopted by the historic Congress on the Progress of Islam (Kongres Kemajuan Islam) organized by this group in 1966 was "To urge the government to establish an Islamic university in Malaysia (Mendesak Kerajaan supaya menubohkan sa-buah Universiti Islam di Malaysia)"
